5 Common Mistakes When Installing Industrial TFT LCD Display Panels

I've worked in the industrial TFT LCD display field for 15 years and have dealt with hundreds of on-site installation and troubleshooting cases. Many problems weren't caused by LCD panels. Instead, they came from small oversights during installation. The good news is that many of these issues can be quickly identified and fixed with remote support. You don't always need to ship the device back or wait for a technician to visit. Below are the five most common problems we've met in the field, along with practical ways to solve them. I hope this blog helps you avoid unnecessary troubles.

Problem 1: The LCD panel turns on but the image looks scrambled

Case Study

In 2023, a food packaging equipment manufacturer in Shandong was using an 18.5-inch industrial TFT LCD panel on a labeling machine. After three months of continuous use, the LCD [anel suddenly started showing a scrambled image. They sent me a video. My first thought was a loose cable. We told them to unplug and replug the LVDS cable. That fixed it. But three days later, the same problem came back.

I went on-site to check. It turned out the machine's vibrations were loosening the cable. The final fix was simple – we secured the cable in several places to stop it from moving.

Note:

Phenomenon

Cause

Problem

Scrambled image (lines, blocks, messy picture)

Signal problem

The image changes but looks wrong

White screen (totally blank, no image at all)

Power to screen is OK, but no signal

Backlight is on, but nothing shows on screen

Step-by-step checks:

• Unplug and replug the cable. (you can do this yourself.)

• Check the LCD Panel's power supply voltage.

• Make sure the driver board program matches the LCD panel model.

• Check if the cable is broken inside.

Problem 2 – Image is off-center, wrong size, or too dark

Case Study

In early 2024, a medical device company in Henan was using a 10.4-inch TFT LCD panel on a new patient monitor. They called and said the image didn't fill the screen – there were black bars on the sides – and it looked too dark overall. This is a very common problem in the installation and debugging of industrial LCD panels, and I immediately understood where the problem lay.

Their LCD motherboard was set to output 1024x768, but the panel's native resolution was 800x600. The LCD driver board tried to scale the image, which caused the black bars and made the text look blurry. They had accidentally turned on the backlight power-saving mode. Once we set LCD controller board to output 800x600 and turned off power-saving mode, the LCD panel worked perfectly.

Step-by-step checks:

♦ Match the resolution– Make sure your computer's output resolution equals the LCD panel's native resolution.

♦ Run auto-adjust. (if you're using a VGA connection.)

♦ Check the OSD settings.

♦ Check if the backlight is aging.

Problem 3 – Text or images look blurry

Case Study

In early 2024, an industrial automation device company in Zhejiang was using a 12.1-inch industrial LCD panel with a PLC system. They told us the text looked fuzzy and had ghosting around the edges. We looked at the setup over video and saw that the VGA cable was too long.

What we did:

We replaced it with a VGA extender that boosts the signal. That solved it.

Step-by-step checks:

• Match the resolution – again.

• Check the cable type and length.

• Adjust phase/clock (for VGA connections).

• Clean the LCD panel surface – sometimes it's just dirt or a protective film you forgot to remove.

Problem 4 – LCD Screen flashes once, then goes dark, but the power light stays on

Case Study

In early 2025, a coal mine safety equipment company in Shaanxi had a 10.4-inch industrial TFT LCD panel for underground use. They said the LCD panel would turn on for a second, then go dark. We took the 10.4-inch LCD panel they returned and tested it on our own device. Every single one worked perfectly. The problem was their power supply design.

What was really going on:

The power supply they built had too much electrical noise (ripple over 200mV). This caused the backlight driver chip to trigger over-voltage protection and shut down immediately after startup.

Step-by-step checks:

Figure out if it's just the backlight or the whole LCD panel: shine a flashlight on the screen. Can you still see a faint image? If yes, the backlight is the problem.

♦ Check the backlight power supply voltage.

♦ Check if the backlight cable is damaged.

♦ Check for over-voltage protection.

Problem 5 – Vertical or horizontal lines appear on the screen

Case Study

At the end of 2025, a medical device customer in Henan called us. A medical monitor had suddenly developed many bright vertical lines running. They needed it fixed.

What we did remotely:

We asked them to try two quick tests:

• The press test – Gently press on the screen bezel near where the line appears. The line faded noticeably.

• Reseat the cable – Unplug and replug the cable. The line was still there.

The press test told us the problem was a loose COF bond (the connection between the driver chip and the glass). This is a hardware failure that can't be fixed on-site.

We shipped a replacement industrial LCD panel right away. We also gave them a temporary solution – put a thin foam pad behind the bezel at that spot, which made the line disappear. They got the monitor working that same day again and replaced the industrial LCD screen three days later.
