Why Does an LCD Panel Flicker? Causes and Solutions

Now, many devices across various industries are applying TFT LCD screens. Many customers encounter a frustrating, classic fault during the initial project or after the equipment has been operational for some time—the screen of the LCD panel suffers from intermittent, occasional, or continuous screen flickering. Screen flickering not only degrades the experience of human-computer interaction and causes visual fatigue for operators, and it can also trigger misjudgments during critical operations. So I will introduce the most common causes of flickering, the simplest detection methods, and solutions in this article, hoping it will be helpful to you.

I. Causes of LCD Screen Flickering

The phenomenon of screen flickering refers to display abnormalities such as abnormal fluctuations in screen brightness, image jittering, or the appearance of stripe interference.


1. Hardware and Cabling Issues


In industrial fields (such as CNC machine tools and automotive terminals), long-term mechanical vibration, thermal aging, or physical pressure on metal enclosures can cause LVDS/eDP cables or power/signal lines, such as HDMI and DisplayPort, connecting the motherboard and the LCD screen to loosen and undergo subtle displacement. As long as one or two data lines within the cable have poor contact, or the interface oxidizes in a humid environment, image data will be lost, leading to horizontal bright lines or snowy dot flickering on the LCD screen.


2. Graphics Driver and Software Issues


If an incompatible graphics card driver is used, or if timing bugs exist after updating the firmware, the video signal output by the motherboard will become chaotic. More commonly, during the process of lighting up the screen, the register initialization codes officially provided by the LCD screen distributor or manufacturer (such as AUO, BOE, Sharp, etc.) are not strictly followed, and then a layer of un-erasable rolling bars will be generated on the LCD screen.

 

3. Refresh Rate Mismatches


An LCD screen displays images by refreshing the frame. If the refresh rate of the signal output by the industrial motherboard does not match the native refresh rate of the LCD screen itself (typically 60Hz), or if the refresh rate is set too low in the software, there will be obvious intermittent jittering and screen tearing when the LCD screen switches images.


4. Backlight Flickering


Industrial LCD screens rely on high-power LED modules for lighting, which requires a dedicated LED constant-current driver board to control the brightness. If the quality of the constant-current board is substandard, or if the client sets the PWM dimming frequency too low in the motherboard software in order to reduce brightness, the time intervals between the backlight turning on and off will be captured by the human eye. At this point, the entire screen will begin flashing bright and dark at a high frequency.


5. Electromagnetic Interference


This is a challenge unique to industrial environments. Industrial LCD displays transmit images by relying on weak, high-frequency differential signals. If your cable lacks a metal braided shielding mesh, or if it is placed too close to some strong electromagnetic field equipment to save space, it can cause screen flickering.

II. How to Solve Screen Flickering Issues?


1. How to Fix at the Hardware Level?


♦ Checking Backlight via Smartphone: If you suspect that the backlight driver is abnormal, directly shoot a video using the slow-motion function of your phone. If bright and dark stripes are discovered, directly replace the constant-current source driver circuit to ensure the PWM dimming frequency is greater than 150Hz.
♦ Checking Cables via Shaking Method: Lightly shake the device or cable. If the flickering intensifies, it indicates that the cable has poor contact. Replug or resolder the cable, and apply an anti-oxidation agent over the interface to prevent oxidation in high-humidity industrial environments.
♦ Checking Voltage via Multimeter: Measure the circuit voltage with a multimeter. If the fluctuation is large, equip the device with a voltage stabilizer or a UPS. If the capacitors on the motherboard have already "bulged," directly replace them with brand new, high-quality solid capacitors.

 

 

2. How to Adjust Software and Drivers?


♦ Increasing Refresh Rate: Forcefully adjust the screen refresh rate to ≥75Hz in the system, which can effectively resolve many flickering problems.
♦ Initialization Configuration: When lighting up the screen, the register initialization codes officially provided by the screen distributor or manufacturer must be strictly written.
♦ Driver Updates: Directly upgrade the firmware of the graphics card or main control chip to repair timing bugs inside the chip.

 

 

3. How to Execute Environmental Adaptability Design?


♦ Magnetic Chokes and Avoidance: Install anti-interference cores onto the signal lines. During cable placement, the LCD display and signal lines must maintain a physical distance of over 50cm from strong electromagnetic equipment.
♦ Thermal Management: The industrial site is too hot, making the internal T-CON chip of the screen prone to overheating, crashing, and flickering. Install thermal conductive silicone pads and heatsinks onto the chip. According to laboratory data, for every 10°C reduction in temperature, the running stability of the screen can be directly enhanced by 7%.

 

 

4. Special Screens and Operational Pitfall-Avoidance Measures


♦ SPI Interface Screens Have Extremely Weak Anti-Interference: If your device is deployed in an environment with intense electromagnetic interference, it is recommended to directly switch to a screen with an RGB or LVDS interface, which possesses natural anti-interference capabilities.
♦ Low-Brightness Flickering of OLED Screens: If an OLED screen is utilized, it relies on low-frequency PWM dimming under low brightness levels, which causes severe eye pain for operators over long viewing periods. "DC Dimming" must be enabled within the system, or the screen brightness must be maintained above 40%.
♦ Preventing Screen Flashing During Program Flashing: Before flashing a program, the IO pins must be initialized in the software code first, or the screen connection cable must be disconnected. Otherwise, the transient high-voltage bias can easily damage the polarization layers of the LCD panel.

  • Case Study:

    Case Study: "Signal Interference Screen Flickering" Induced by a Machine Tool VFD

    We previously cooperated with a large domestic CNC machine tool manufacturer whose control panel used a 10.4-inch industrial-grade LCD screen. When the machine was powered on but idling, the screen display was normal, but the moment the operator started the machine tool spindle and the variable frequency drive (VFD) accelerated, dense horizontal wavy lines appeared on the screen. Our team brought a digital oscilloscope to the client's workshop. We first instructed the client to use their smartphone's slow-motion video function to film the screen; if the backlight had been flickering, thick black-and-white scrolling bars would have appeared in the video, but the footage was clean, ruling out a backlight issue. We then used the oscilloscope to measure the LVDS clock lines at the input terminal of the LCD screen and found that once the VFD was turned on, high-frequency impulse voltage spikes were superimposed onto the signal waveform. Upon opening the chassis, we discovered that the client had used an ordinary unshielded ribbon cable, and this signal line was tightly bundled together with the AC high-voltage power lines of the machine tool spindle VFD. The intense electromagnetic interference corrupted the signal. Our solution was to replace the cable with a high-density, metal braided mesh shielded LVDS cable, with a 360-degree ground connection at both ends of the shielding layers, and to separate the ribbon cable from the high-voltage power lines by a physical distance of more than 50 centimeters. After this modification, the LCD screen image remained stable regardless of the machine tool's operation.

The screen flickering fault of industrial LCD screens is often the result of mutual interactions among four parties: the environment, the motherboard, the cable, and the LCD screen.
